What is the Speak Up Research Project?

Speak Up is a nationally recognized research initiative run by Project Tomorrow. Every year, it collects survey data from students, educators, parents, and administrators about technology use, readiness, and impact in K–12 schools.

For California, the Speak Up survey is more than a data collection tool. It’s a statewide opportunity to understand how technology is actually being used in classrooms—and how it can be used more effectively to improve student outcomes, increase instructional coherence, and reduce variability across schools.

CALIE is California’s lead partner for Speak Up, coordinating district participation, facilitating statewide cohort learning, and connecting survey findings directly to action through the Effective Technology Guidelines and CALIE’s broader programs.

Participating districts receive:

  • Customized district-level data reports to support continuous improvement planning
  • Comparison data within the California statewide cohort
  • Networking opportunities with peer districts across Northern, Central, and Southern California
  • Findings to inform technology planning, AI readiness, professional learning, and funding decisions

Participation is available to California K–12 districts at no cost as part of the statewide cohort.

The California Statewide Cohort

Districts that join the California cohort don’t just get data—they get a learning community. CALIE facilitates cross-district strategy conversations and shared sessions designed to help California educators move from access to impact.

The cohort brings together districts from across Northern, Central, and Southern California to surface common challenges, share what’s working, and build collective capacity around evidence-informed technology use.

Cohort members get:

  • Access to California-specific statewide data for benchmarking
  • Facilitated peer learning sessions with districts across the state
  • Priority access to CALIE resources and implementation tools
  • A direct bridge from data to the Effective Technology Guidelines framework

From Data to Direction: How CALIE Helps

Speak Up data tells you what’s happening. CALIE helps you figure out what to do about it.

For schools and districts ready to go deeper, CALIE works alongside district and school leaders to build educator capacity around identifying and increasing effective technology integration practices aligned to student learning outcomes.

Through our Effective Technology Guidelines, leadership development programs, and facilitated planning sessions, we help schools move beyond tool adoption to measurable impact.

Effective Technology Guidelines

CALIE’s five-domain framework helps school and district teams assess how technology is supporting teaching and learning—and where to focus next.

Leadership Development

Through the CALIE AI Leadership Academy and customized coaching, we build the capacity of instructional and technology leaders to turn insights into action.

Facilitated Planning

CALIE offers structured planning sessions that help school and district teams align around a shared vision, using Speak Up data as the starting point.
