Two workshops on March 17, 2027, the day before Spring Forward 2027 begins, presented by CAST as part of UDL-Con California. Each is $250, runs 10am-3pm, and can be attended on its own. No conference pass required.

Accessibility in Action: Turning the What, Why, & How of Accessibility into Practice

Accessibility can feel complex, but it doesn’t have to be. This preconference breaks down the essentials of accessible educational materials and assistive/accessible technology and shows how they work together with Universal Design for Learning (UDL).

Through guided discussion, examples, and practical application, participants will build a clearer understanding of how accessibility supports learner variability and strengthens everyday instruction. Walk away with actionable ideas and strategies for designing learning that works for all learners from the start.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Understand and identify how accessible materials and technologies support diverse learners

Design for All: Exploring Universal Design for Learning

This session provides an overview of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), a research-based framework that supports inclusive and flexible teaching practices. Participants will explore the foundational principles of UDL, examine the UDL Guidelines, and apply them to real classroom examples by observing and analyzing teaching videos through a UDL lens. The workshop culminates in a hands-on activity where participants design or redesign a lesson using the UDL Lesson Designer, ensuring that learning experiences are accessible and engaging for all students. Whether you’re new to UDL or an experienced leader, this workshop will help you deepen your understanding and strengthen your ability to implement UDL effectively. Administrators will deepen their understanding of the research of UDL and implementation practices, educators have the opportunity to reflect on their teaching and enhance lessons with UDL.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the core principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and explain how learner variability influences instructional design
  • Analyze learning experiences through a UDL lens to identify barriers and opportunities for increasing access, participation, and engagement
  • Use the UDL Guidelines to make informed instructional decisions that support diverse learner needs, strengths, and preferences
  • Apply the UDL design process to create or enhance a lesson that provides flexible pathways for engagement, representation, and action & expression

Effective Technology for Teaching and Learning

Spring Forward 2027 will feature sessions that demonstrate thoughtful, learner-centered, and evidence-informed uses of technology that positively impact teaching and learning in real-world practice. Strong submissions are grounded in authentic classroom, school, district, or organizational implementation and show how technology supported more intentional, effective, equitable, accessible, or sustainable learning experiences.

CALIE’s Effective Technology Guidelines help educators, schools, and districts evaluate, measure, and improve the effectiveness and impact of educational technology. They are designed to help educators ask better questions:

  • Is this technology improving learning?
  • Is it supporting teaching?
  • Is it worth the time, investment, and effort?

Every proposal identifies which domain of the Effective Technology Guidelines the session addresses: Learning Impact and Engagement, Instructional Practice and Design, Evidence of Outcomes and Improvement, Access and Learning Conditions, or Data, Ethics & Sustainability. Domain alignment is part of the scoring rubric, so choose the domain your session most directly serves.

Before you open the form, draft your responses in the proposal template and study the exemplar submission, an annotated real proposal that scored 28 out of 28 on the rubric.

All Spring Forward 2027 session proposals will be reviewed against a scoring rubric. Reviewers are CALIE members who evaluate each submission for quality, relevance, and fit. Forward Reflects the Current Reality

Schools are asking harder questions now. “Should we ban phones?” “How do we balance screen time?” “What does EdTech equity actually look like?”

These aren’t tech adoption questions—they’re impact questions. Teachers, leaders, and administrators need a space to grapple with these tensions together, not separately. Forward is that space.

We’re not abandoning 40 years of CUE. We’re honoring it by evolving. Spring CUE served its time brilliantly—it positioned technology as the central conversation. Now, that conversation has matured. Technology is important, but it’s a means, not an end. Forward signals that we’re moving toward something bigger: systemic change, educator agency, and equitable innovation. Registering a group or district

If you are registering more than one person from your school, district, or county office, start with the group registration form instead of the individual registration link. Our registration platform needs an organization profile in place before a group can be registered, and the form gives us what we need to set that up.

How it works:

Fill out the group registration form with your organization name, billing address, billing contact, and point of contact. Within one business day we will create your organization profile, link it to your account, and email you a link to set your password. Once you log in, you can register each attendee under your organization. Names and email addresses for each attendee are required at the time of registration, and substitutions are allowed.

Paying by purchase order:

Select “Bill Me” at checkout. Payment on a PO is due within 30 days of the invoice date. If you need a quote before you register, email info@joincalie.org.

CAST and CALIE are bringing UDL-Con California inside Spring Forward 2027. Two dedicated Universal Design for Learning session rooms run all three days, with sessions led by CAST experts, district leaders, and classroom practitioners. Your conference pass includes all of it.

CAST also presents two stand-alone workshops, Accessibility in Action and Design for All, on March 17, the day before the conference. Each is $250 and does not require a conference pass.
